On 25 March 1949, the reorganization which began in 1945, was completed by redesignating troops as companies. On 23 October 1965, the first real combat test came at the historic order of General Westmoreland to send the First Team into an air assault mission to pursue and fight the enemy across 2,500 square miles of jungle. On 18 November daylight broke over a quiet and tense battlefield. Throughout the remainder of the year the troops performed garrison duty, outpost and patrol duty along the Rio Grande with occasional penetration into Mexico to search for bandits. the Japanese had been able to readjust their guns to fire lower and some casualties were suffered. Custer readied his forces to march into Mexico to drive Emperor Maximilian and his cohorts out, but no orders were issued. The 3rd Brigade gathered their gear and weapons and began to move by highway and air to staging areas in Eastern Binh Dinh Province.
